June 2004 Newsletter

Next Meeting:
Monday, July 12, 2004
7:00pm at the Tulsa Garden Center,
2435 S. Peoria Ave.

Program: Hands-on styling, also known as Bonsai by Committee. The meeting has been moved due to the July 4th holiday.

There was one visitor at this month's meeting, Minnie Romero, who accompanied her husband, Mark, a new member. Mark and Minnie joined as a family membership.

This weekend our club will stage its' member's Garden Tour. This is limited to members of Green Country Bonsai and their guests. Three member's gardens will be on tour. Tom Howard's, Norm Summers' and Chuck and Pat Cockman's.

A workshop will be held on Saturday, July 17th from 8:30am until 4:00pm. All members are invited to bring trees they would like help with, or just want to work on, in a community environment. The club will have wire that can be used for wiring your trees. Bring tools, if you have them, otherwise members will normally let you borrow what you need.

Brussel's Rendezvous was held over the Memorial Day weekend. Charles Sitter attended and reported that it was very good and had great attendance. The new greenhouse was impressive, including its paved walkways. Charles reported that if you got there early enough, you got to park on an Asphalt parking lot, otherwise it was the field.

At the next meeting, (Hands-on Styling/Bonsai by Committee) there will be junipers for sale for $3.00. This is a great price for a practice tree. With a little luck and patience, you might end up with a "Show" Bonsai. If you plan on purchasing one of these junipers please send an email to Need A Tree so we'll have enough on-hand. If you don't have email service, please call Norm @ 451-5750.

Show & Tell:Mike Flanagan displayed some stones collected at the mysterious "northwest of Tulsa" location. He also showed some Azaleas in pots with moss growing under the trees. According to Mike, If you hold the pot at eye level (with your arm resting on the armrest of the chair) you get a good perspective. With a little squinting it looks like a full size tree.

Bill Watkins brought a forest complete with moss-covered hills.

Jack Cramer had two rocks his son collected for him. One was identified as a Thunder Egg by Charles Sitter. The other was identified as a riverstone or maybe a sandstone or maybe an impression rock. The verdict is still out.

Pat Coen displayed a Hosta and a rock shaped like an animal. There was some discussion regarding what animal it resembled. However, since it was Pat Coen's, his opinion that it was a Lion seemed to prevail.

Marcus Bush, one of our newer members brought several trees on which he wanted advice and a rock he had collected for displaying Bonsai. Thanks for getting involved, Marcus. It's nice to see new members getting excited about a hobby we all love.

The Raffle was impressive, Chuck Cockman donated two large trees and several other items. Why Norm, the president of our club and Pat Cockman (the wife of Chuck) won two of the best trees makes you wonder about the system!

Mike Flanagan provided the refreshments. I vote we make Mike the permanent Refreshment Chairman. All in favor, say Aye!

Debbie Schwacke has resigned as the newsletter editor. If anyone would like to volunteer to take her place, please contact Norm Summers.
