| Next Meeting: Monday, August 2, 2004 7:00pm at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria Ave. Program: Hands-on clay pot making. The July meeting started with the introduction of visitor Sid Chism. We also had three new members join the club, Andre Chenault, Justin Lovelace and Brent Phillippe. Prior to the program members discussed their recent trip to the BCI convention in St. Louis. Green Country Bonsai was well represented at the convention. Pat Coen and Mike Flanagan had a booth where they sold trees and stones. Pat had viewing stones in the convention show. Charles Sitter and Roy Hayes were there early getting the good trees and pots. Roy staked out a seat near the entrance where he kept an eye on everything, when he was awake. Peter and Shigemi purchased some collected trees and Peter participated in one of the workshops. Steve Sanders and I were observers and I appreciated the program I observed. Mike Blake came later and observed the proceedings. I was surprised and impressed that there were opening in most of the workshops. If you have any interest in attending one these major events I would encourage you to seriously consider doing so. I know C.K. Carlson, has already been checking into the next major event next year in Washington, D.C., and had asked if any other members were interested. You might check with C.K. if you are interested. Show and tell: Mike Flanagan brought a Chickasaw Crape Myrtle that he purchased last year at a local nursery. Steve Sanders brought some accent plants, academe, pencil grass and one he did not know the exact name. Charles Sitter brought an Orange Jasmine that he is air layering. He shared with us the product he had specially purchased to propagate with. Pat Coen brought some stones to share with the group. Stones were from China, Osage County and the Mohave Desert. We are fortunate to have members willing to share their expertise and experiences. The program was the opportunity for members to work on their styling techniques. The club brought green mound junipers that member could work on with the assistance and guidance from fellow club members. If the members wanted to purchase trees they were available for three (3) dollars. A good time was had by all and a learning opportunity was provided by the club. |
As has become the custom, trees and other bonsai related items were brought by members for a raffle between the business part of the meeting and the program. This has become an opportunity for members to acquire plants and supplies at a reasonable price if they are lucky. I would like to thank the members that provide these items. I know that Chuck has consistently brought items and I have been lucky enough to get a couple of them. This has provided a profitable source of income for the club. So a BIG thanks. The club held a workshop July 17th, at the Garden Center Barn. The turn-out was good and another opportunity for members to share ideas, advice and fellowship. Charles was especially unselfish in his assistance to new and old members. One can always learn and this is a great way to learn and share. Mike wanted me to be sure to tell everyone that at our meeting on August 2nd, be sure to wear clothing that most likely will get dirty. When Mike says hands on pot making that is exactly what he means and you will get smudged. Start saving your money for the Roy Nagatoshi workshop October 30 and 31. There will be two sessions per day at $50 dollars per session. This is a chance to bring big trees, little trees, difficult trees or those prize trees that need a little something special. Good news! Doris Cramer’s cast continues to get smaller. Chuck is going into the hospital on the 28th, I will be praying for Chuck and the people that care for him! Pat is hoping that nothing happens to his sweet disposition while in the hospital. I want to apologize for not having the newsletter out sooner. As you may know, our editor resigned two months ago and the officers have taken on the task, by default, of getting the newsletter out. I appreciate the effort they have made. This will continue until we are able to coerce, bribe or guilt someone into taking the position. We have been fortunate in the past to have had gifted and enthusiastic members write our newsletter. Roy and Doris come to mind when I think of members that have done an admirable job. Thanks to Roy for the template that the newsletter is written on. Don’t forget to water! Sometimes it is important to check trees morning and evening. |
