July Meeting Notes

  • Dan called the meeting to order and reminded members about the work shop. We had one visitor, Jim Cecil.
  • Mike Flanagan presented a new variety of a Chickasaw Crape myrtle. This variety was introduced a couple of years ago. Mike says it is very low maintenance; just pinching the flowers occasionally keeps the blooms from getting to big. Mike also had a sand plum with ripening fruit.
  • Some of the items being raffled had changed hands in previous raffles. It was interesting to find that after another person had cared for and styled the specimen the previous owner could not recognize it when they won it back. After some study the tree was recognized as their former specimen. Each of us has a different perspective and that opens the eye to new possibilities.

July Program
Mike Flanagan presented a nice slide program. Mike has quite a talent for photography that resulted in beautiful bonsai and landscape images. We thank Mike for a wonderful presentation.

Member Workshop
The workshop was Saturday, July 16th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This time we were in the basement, which only put us closer to our supplies in the closet and, unlike the barn, was air-conditioned. Everyone used the cart to get all their trees and tools, inside; we meant business. Charles Sitter was again the guru in residence. We are lucky that he shares his knowledge so freely. He was especially helpful to me, saving a great deal of work and averting a less desirable outcome with my ficus grove. As the noon hour rolled around, through serendipity and Mike Blake’s intercession, we were invited to dine at the bountiful buffet put out by the Iris Club. It was delicious and we thank the Iris club for their generosity. If you missed this workshop—and you know who you are—be sure to make an effort to attend next time. It is very productive to work among, especially in my case, more experienced members and during the day when most of us are most alert.

July Bonsai Care
Dog days have arrived earlier than usual at my garden. The entire routine has been reduced to watering and weeding. The same routine applies to our trees; do not forget to water! Sometimes it is important to check trees morning and evening. Pots also should be kept weeded and clean to reduce competition for water and nutrients. Heat loving tropical trees can still be safely repotted. For the rest, you and the trees need to take it easy in this heat.
